Telchac
Puerto is a quiet fishing village on the Gulf Coast of Mexico, in the
state of Yucatan. Less than 1 hour away from Merida, the state capital, it
remains a hidden treasure...please
don't tell anybody.
Where
to Shop - Tienda Fatima, on the coast road right next to
the baseball park is the first store you'll see coming from Progreso.
They are a small store with lots of products and are very helpful and
friendly. Rosa speaks some English. Bodega Aurera is a division
of Wal-Mart in Progreso, at the intersection of the highway from
Merida and the coast road. It is a large American-style superstore
where you'll find everything. For local flavor, the market in Motul
is a must do. The liquor store on the corner across from the
bus station in Telchac has beer, wine, and liquor. There are 2 bakeries
in town, one on the main square and one off the square. The tortilleria
is on the coast road and is open in the mornings.
Where
to Eat - There are many seafood restaurants in Telchac Puerto - my
favorite is la Picuda, just off the main square towards the
lighthouse. Many local businesses sell food on weekends - barbequed
pork and chicken, cochinita pibil, fried fish, salbutes, panuchos,
etc. You can buy a full buffet, including drinks, at breakfast, lunch,
or dinner at the Hotel Reef Yucatan. Also, try the coconut candies
from Dulces Chay, a little, green kiosk on the coast road in the
center of town. Delicious!
What
to do - See our tours
page,
featuring day trips, fishing, etc. Also, check out Yucatan
Today
for lots of information about the area!
What
to do if you become ill - there is a small, government-run clinic
behind the baseball park on the west side of town. They are open from
8 am - to 4 pm every day, but bang on the door if they're closed. They
can give medicine, stabilize you in case of accident, and provide
transport ot the hospital in Motul. All for free. We also have an
English-speaking doctor from Progreso on call who will make
housecalls.
